Newport Civic Centre, Wales
Newport Civic Centre was designed by architect Thomas Cecil Howitt (1889–1968), a Nottingham architect best known for his distinctive, art deco style. The Centre is a Grade II Listed building and is the successor to the Victorian Town Hall that was located in Commercial Street. Construction on the Centre started in 1937, and was complete in 1940. Due to the war, work on the clock tower was suspended until 1963.
The base of the completed clock tower contains a collection of 12 colourful murals by renowned German artist Hans Feibusch. Commissioned in 1960 and completed in 1964, this murals depict the history of Newport from early Celtic times to the modern Industrial period. Feibusch was also commissioned to paint at the village of Portmeirion in North Wales and there is also a Hans Feibusch mural in the Dolman Theatre, Newport.
